Other info. - This species can be found throughout Missouri. The plant can be variable depending on habitat. Steyermark noted two varieties for the state depending on leaf shape. The varieties are probably not valid as the leaves shape is probably more a product of habitat. The two different leaf shapes are shown above.
H. sphaerocarpum can sometimes be confused with another species, H. spathulatum (Spach.) Steud., but the latter is taller, more shrubby, and has no rhizomes. The large, pom pom flowers of H. spathulatum are the best characteristic to look for.
