Other info. - This little species can be found in the southern 1/2 of Missouri. It can be identified in the field by its minute maroon flowers, uncinate-bristled fruits, and four elliptic leaves per node. A similar species, G. circaezans Michx., is similar but has whitish-green flowers and leaves which have 3 conspicuous veins. The leaves of G. pilosum have a single conspicuous midrib.
The roots of this species and others in the genus contain a substance which can be used as a red dye.
