Habitat - Moist soils along stream edges, sloughs, ponds, lakes, bottomland forests. mesic upland prairies, wet pastures, ditches.

Origin - Native to U.S. and most of the northern hemisphere.

Other info. - This common species can be found scattered throughout mainly the lower half of Missouri. The plant is easy to identify becasue of its inflorescence, which seems to come from the side of the stem.
This species can produce large clumps when left undisturbed.
The Missouri material belongs to the subspecies solutus (Fern. & Wiegand) Hamet-Ahti. The subspecies effusus is mostly Eurasian.
